The Earle of Salisbury's Pavane

Sir Robert Cecil was named Earl of Salisbury in 1605 by James I. Cecil had many works dedicated to him by some of the most well-known composers of his time: Thomas Morley, Robert Jones, Thomas Dowland and Orlando Gibbons. It is only natural that William Byrd (1540-1623) wrote this pavane to honor the memory of Cecil when the Earl of Salisbury passed away in 1612.    The piece should be played with clear articulation, lightness and the stately character of a pavane. Dynamic contrasts should be clear, but not overdone. The melody wanders freely between different instruments groups, and it is important to keep it balanced in relation to the ensemble sound at all times. Difficulty grade 3+.
