The Earl of Salisbury's Pavane
As was customary, the stately 4/4 of a pavane was followed by a more lively galliard in triple meter. The Earl of Salisbury's Pavane is unique in that it has two galliards which accompany the pavane. The second galliard bears a dedication to Marye Brownlo, the daughter of Richard Brownlo (an influential lawyer of the time). The galliards are shorter (two strains instead of the customary three strains) and significantly less ornamented than other galliards Byrd had previously composed. Grade 4
